In the gospel reading for Sunday 5 September 2012, Jesus releases the tongue of a man with a speech impediment (Mark 7:31-37). Yet next Sunday, September 12th, 2021, we will listen to the admonishments of the letter of James to beware the tongue. And we will hear the apostle Peter both declare Jesus to be the Christ and rebuke him for forecasting the Passion.
Apparently it is not speech only that can be wicked or misleading. And after all as the 19th Psalm sings, “The heavens declare the glory of God!” We are invited to be part of that divine chorus of voices; what shall we do with the voices given us?
